But don't expect me to recommend salt and pepper, these are unusual herbs and spices that you might not have considered, read on to learn much, much more.

  • Parsley

Parsley is one of the most popular of all he commonly used kitchen herbs; it's a green herb even when dried and this makes it visually attractive as well as being useful taste modifier for any dish. Parsley is one of the most versatile herbs and I make a point of keeping at least one of my spice jars filled with it. The best types of food to use parsley with are egg dishes, like omelettes and scrambled eggs, fish dishes particularly for rich sauces and all kinds of heavy meat dishes like steak and kidney pie or roast lamb. This is because the fresh taste of parsley will cut through the heavy, meaty taste of these strong tasting meats.

  • Oregano

Oregano is another green herb and is probably the second most popular herb found in British kitchens today, no spice rack or even set of spice jars is complete without Oregano. Oregano has its origins in the Mediterranean where the hot sun and dry climate combine to give this pungent herb a strong taste and aroma which is fantastic for all those exotic Southern European Dishes like fresh paste, chilli pizzas and all sorts of Eastern European Dishes like Goulash or Meatballs.

  • Turmeric

For all those lovers of Indian Food Turmeric, known as Haldi in India, is the one critical spice that your spice rack shouldn't be without. Turmeric is a pungent spice with a familiar smell and a vivid yellow colour. Indeed many claim that Indian chefs use Turmeric as much for the colour as for the taste, I don't agree with that entirely but it certainly does impart as much colour as flavour to dishes. Indeed one must be very careful when using this spice as it will stain any surface with which it comes into contact, so handle with care! But don't let that put you off, because Turmeric is a wonderful spice which imparts something uniquely exotic wherever you use it.

So there you have it, my guide to which herbs and spices you should fill your spice jars with, these essential recommendations could well transform your cooking!
